On a beautifully warm and sunny day in late March, 2015, a dozen or so members and partners had a wonderful day out doing what horticulturists do best – visiting gardens and nurseries!
It was an early start but by the time the group met together at Lambley (Ascot, north of Ballarat) to walk through David Glenn’s Dry Garden, display beds and nursery, it was easy to see this was going to be an outstanding ‘tour’.
From Lambley, the group headed to The Garden of St Erth, at Blackwood. Formerly the home and garden of Tommy Garnett, The Age’s gardening columnist in the 1970s and ’80s, The Diggers Club took over the property in the mid 1990s. After lunch at the onsite cafe, we enjoyed a leisurely stroll around the gardens before heading up the road a few minutes to Frogmore.
While the 5 acre formal gardens and stunning perennial borders are open only during March and April each year, Frogmore has a well established retail and mail order business. The owners have created garden rooms, each quite different from its neighbours. A fitting end to a delightful gardens ramble!
