MIFGS 2023: Orbis by Carla Perry

Describe your garden in 5 words

Inviting, sustainable, naturalistic, soft, habitat.

Which plant was the hero of your garden and why?

Gomphrena haageana (Globe Amaranth) was there hero plant of my garden. It was the plant everyone asked about. It was a strong pop of red in front of a mostly green palette. I have never grown it before and I’m looking forward to trialing this plant in my garden. It makes a great cut flower and should reseed in a meadow garden.

What was an obstacle you had to overcome and how did you do it?

Prior to MIFGS I had never built anything before. I had no idea how long everything would take. I just had to be patient with myself and give every spare minute I had to this project!

What piece of feedback will you always remember?

Everyone cries once in the build-up to MIFGS and that’s ok.

The stage is yours, what do you want to say?

MIFGS is a fantastic avenue for students to meet amazing mentors in the horticulture community. Everyone was friendly and willing to answer questions and give advice. I look forward to getting involved in this show again in the future!
