University of Melbourne Herbarium & System Garden Tour

Explore one of Melbourne’s most fascinating botanical treasures — where science, plants and history meet.

🌱 Part 1: Herbarium (10:30 am – 12 pm)

Built up over nearly a century, the University of Melbourne Herbarium houses 150,000 specimens of plants, fungi and algae including historically important collections and artwork. It houses collections of flowering plants, ferns, bryophytes, algae and fungi as well as historic botanical objects and artwork. The oldest plant specimens were collected by Sir Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander in 1770.

We will break for lunch from 12noon until 1.00pm. Lunch will be at your own expense.

🌮 Part 2: Lunch (12–1 pm)

Lunch spot yet to be determined.

🌿 Part 3: The System Garden (1–2 pm)

Established in 1856, The System Garden is one of the oldest teaching gardens in the country.

Plants in the garden are arranged into subclasses and families, by the Cronquist classification system (1988). This means the garden can be used as a teaching source for botany students as well as a recreational space for the wider community.
