DESCRIPTION:Explore one of Melbourne’s most fascinating botanical treasures — where science\, plants and history meet. \n🌱 Part 1: Herbarium (10:30 am – 12 pm) \nBuilt up over nearly a century\, the University of Melbourne Herbarium houses 150\,000 specimens of plants\, fungi and algae including historically important collections and artwork. It houses collections of flowering plants\, ferns\, bryophytes\, algae and fungi as well as historic botanical objects and artwork. The oldest plant specimens were collected by Sir Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander in 1770. \nWe will break for lunch from 12noon until 1.00pm. Lunch will be at your own expense. \n🌮 Part 2: Lunch (12–1 pm) \nLunch spot yet to be determined. \n🌿 Part 3: The System Garden (1–2 pm) \nEstablished in 1856\, The System Garden is one of the oldest teaching gardens in the country. \nPlants in the garden are arranged into subclasses and families\, by the Cronquist classification system (1988).
