The hot and steamy weather didn’t deter our large group of plant lovers who attended our final event for the year. Many of our members came along to reconnect with familiar faces but there were also some new-comers. We were treated to a comprehensive tour of Oz Watergardens in Silvan by owner, Darryl Hoogeboom. On several acres Darryl has built up his business to incorporate large holding ponds of water lilies, various hothouses with all manner of water and marginal plants, vast quantities of Irises and large stock ponds. From these he and his team harvest many thousands of water plants each year for the retail market throughout Australia. Darryl’s talk was very informative – we even learned that the drought-resistant Tulbagia can also be treated like a water plant! Darryl generously gave of his time on his day off but suggested that EWHA instead make a donation to the Silvan CFA, which we have done.
It was time for some liquid refreshment in this thirsty weather so we travelled on to Whispering Hills Winery & Cafe in Seville. Here Murray & Marie Lyons hosted us with delicious pizzas and their array of wines.
Our lucky winners of the raffle prizes were Kathy Koutsigaros from Warners’ Nurseries (a Scotts products hamper), Jenny Beaumont(Beth Chatto’s book “The Gravel Garden”) and one of our new members, Elaine Hamilton, who scored some Ausflora plants.
Some stayed on for a wine tasting and Murray’s short tour showing off his vines and small winery before we made some liquid purchases.
It was a great way to finish off the year!
